Mike Dodson's Mule
     also titled "Mike Snyder's Mule"

     Jonas Hardee and Shorty Brown went out for a ride
     With and old deer rifle and an old spotlight a laying by their side
     Shorty had a jug of wine, the say its the best around
     well I wouldn't bet no money on that, but it is the best I've found

     They was a hittin the fields with that old light, and a hittin that wine jug too
     Shorty took a great big drank and said, whadda you wanna do ?
     Jonas said, I don't know but lets get outta here
     we'll go over to Mike Dodson's place, they say he feeds the deer

     They hit Dodson's field with the light, Shorty said, Lookie Here
     thats what I've been a talkin about, this field is full of deer
     Shorty said, I'm gonna shoot that big-un, then we'll head for home
     Jonas said, I don't know...he ain't got no horns and his ears are awful long

     Shorty shot, Jonas looked and said, Shorty, you crazy fool
     this ain't no deer that you've just shot, you've killed Mike Dodson's mule
     [dobro break]

     They jumped in the truck and they hit the road as fast as it would go
     Shorty said, what are we gonna do, and Jonas said, I don't know
     Shorty said, I know one thang, and thats fer doggone sure
     I haint goin home empty-handed tonight, I'm a gonna get me a deer

     They headed down on Valley Road when they thought that the coast was clear
     They finally got that old truck stopped and they started spotlightin deer
     Shorty said, I see one over there just about thirty yards
     Jonas took aim and he pulled that trigger and he hit that deer real hard

     Shorty said, you must have missed him, son, cauz he ain't never fell
     He's standin there shakin his head, and now he's a waggin his tail
     Then the blue lights flashed, Game Wardens came out, sirens began to whail
     They put old Shorty and Jonas in the car, ready to go to jail

     The Game Warden said, you boys ain't smart, cauz we've been a settin right here
     waitin for two fools like you to come along and shoot that tilex deer
     They say that a man that'll spotlight deer has gotta be a fool
     They must be right, cauz late last night they shot Mike Dodson's mule
