The Red House on Browns Mill Road

Then I asked Mama about the "red house" which was our name for the house Mama and Daddy lived in when they first got married. Actually, Daddy was in the Army when they got married...he got out in May of 1956 and they rented the "Red House" from Jim McDaniel (he was some distant relation to the Frank McDaniel Family) This "Red House" stood on Browns Mill road at the base of the Western slope of Clouse Mountain. They called it the "red house" because it was covered with this asphalt/tar paper with fine red gravel, like asphalt shingles. Jim had lost his job when Hawkins Feed Mill closed...then went to work for Washington Shirt Company (the old shirt factory across from Leslie Towne Center) they also went broke, but offered him a job near Nashville. Jim had a large family to support so he took it and moved to Lebanon. My parents rented the house from him for $12.00 per month. This house had 4 or 5 acres with it, and was actually between the farms belonging to the Judds and Huddlestons (Daddy's people) and the Walkers (Mama's folks) As one traveled South-East from the Red House along Brown's Mill Road (up the mountain, and thru the gap) one passed the Horn place, and the Lewis Kirby place where the Frank McDaniels family lived. proceeding on towards Browns Mill, was the farm belonging to Uncle Willis and Aunt Anne (dad's older sister)...next to them was the Rob Daniels place, and across from Rob, was My Uncle David Walker's farm...Uncle David's Farm adjoined the Browns Mill Cemetary and the Falling Water river. I remember many times when I was helping Uncle David work in the hay fields, there, we would rest and eat lunch in the shade of the trees at the edge of the cemetary.
